American Shotokan Karate Academy
Brings home 25 medals and trophies
American Shotokan Karate Academy, participated in an invitational Japan Karate Association karate
tournament in Dallas hosted by Sensei Ricardo Yip Sr. on April 14. A group of 21 students accompanied
chief instructor Renshi-Sensei Michael Jay Jackson to Dallas for the event. The group included children
ranging in age from 6-16 and adults 18-47 who competed in sparring and forms events. Almost half of the
group have a parent in the military at Fort Hood or are serving in Iraq.
Jackson was especially proud of the children. It was the first time many of them had competed in a
tournament and gone up against contestants from other schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with
tournament experience. The students held their own and represented the Killeen area very well by
placing in every category. The academy brought back a total of 25 trophies and medals – 10 first-places,
eight second-places and seven thirds.
The American Shotokan Karate Academy is a part of the Killeen Parks and Recreation program. New
students are accepted anytime during the month.
